What Is Pubic Hair Transplant?
A pubic hair transplant, also known as PHT procedure, involves taking hair from typically the back of the head (scalp) and moving it to the pubic area. The reverse of transplanting pubic hair to the scalp, or head, is also an option but is not the focus of this discussion.
The pubic area is seldom discussed in public but is often a topic of personal importance. How one chooses to style the pubic hair region varies by culture, time period, age, and preference. The latest hair restoration techniques have made it possible to safely transplant hair into the pubic area for those who may be interested.
There are various reasons for why someone would want a snl pubic hair transplant, including:
- Cultural: For example, some Korean women have pubic atrichosis (absence of hair) or hypotrichosis (low numbers of hair). This lack of pubic hair can lead to psychological stress, as pubic hair is seen as a sign of sexual health and fertility in Korean culture.
- Laser hair removal: As laser hair removal becomes one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, some people regret the decision to remove pubic hair.
- Congenital: Patients may have a genetically poor supply of hair in the pubic region and desire a fuller look.
Aging, electrolysis, hormonal changes, burns and other factors can cause pubic hair loss. If you are “bare down there” and want to restore thinning pubic hair, transplant surgery can be used. Follicular unit extraction, or FUE, can be used to harvest donor hair follicles from the scalp to transplant to the pubic region. The new hair will grow naturally, and with our advanced techniques, the process can be completed in a one-day procedure.
Pubic Hair to Scalp Transplants
In some cases, pubic hair is used to replace lost hair on the scalp or face. When there is not enough scalp, facial or body hair for harvesting, pubic hair is another option. Individual follicles can be removed from the pubic region and transplanted to recipient sites on the scalp or other areas. Our advanced FUE method minimizes scarring, making it unnoticeable on the donor or pubic area.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Pubic Hair Transplant?
There must be a good donor supply (such as at the back of the head) from where to get the hair. There are a a few causes of pubic hair loss that are safe to correct with a PHT surgery, including:
- Laser hair removal
- Naturally absent or patchy hair
- Aesthetic preference
How Is a Pubic Hair Transplant in UES, Manhattan Done?
The NYC plastic surgeon and patient must decide on the best donor area, though it is often the back of the head if the density is sufficient. Once the specific donor area is identified, an approximate number of grafts are estimated, which can range from about 200 grafts for a small area up to about 2000 grafts for a larger, full appearance. Next, the FUE (follicular unit extraction) method is used to harvest the grafts.
Most patients opt for the FUE approach since it avoids a linear scar and has an easier recovery compared to FUT (follicular unit transfer). In the FUE approach, the hairs are first all extracted (or harvested) as grafts. Then at the recipient pubic area, recipient sites are made with a blade or needle at the correct angle and direction. The previously removed hairs are then placed into these recipient sites one at a time. Throughout the process, local anesthesia is used to limit discomfort.
How to Prepare for Pubic Hair Transplant?
At your initial appointment at City Facial Plastics in Midtown, Manhattan Dr. Linkov will assess your overall medical health to make sure that you are safe to undergo this typeof procedure, especially since local anesthesia and other oral medications are used throughout the case. Stop all supplements and over the counter medications that can thin the blood. Consider taking Vitamin C and Vitamin K a week before the pubic hair transplant procedure to improve healing and minimize bleeding. Shower the night before or the morning of your procedure to reduce the risk of infection.
If you already have some hairs in the pubic region, keep them at their usual length, as the recipient sites and new hairs will be placed around these existing hairs.
What to Expect on the Day of the Procedure?
Medications that were prescribed to you should be brought into the office the morning of your procedure. After consent is obtained, the hair donor area (scalp) and the recipient area are marked. You will be guided to take the appropriate medications to prepare you for the harvesting portion of the hair transplant procedure. You will be given an antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory pill, a sedative and anxiolytic.
You will then undergo the FUE or FUT extraction (harvesting) portion of the procedure in a comfortable position. Once the grafts are removed, recipient sites are created and then grafts are placed. The overall process may take a few hours for smaller cases, up to a full day for larger cases. A lunch break is provided for longer hair transplant cases.
What Is the Recovery From Pubic Hair Transplant?
As with any surgical procedure, bleeding, swelling and bruising are all possible after a pubic hair transplant. The transplanted hairs should be cared for with precaution for the first five days, to allow them to set in the proper orientation and to eventually grow.
For pubic hair, this involves being extra careful with handling underwear and other clothing. It is best to avoid sexual activity involving the pubic area for at least 1 week. After about three weeks the shafts of the transplanted hairs will usually fall out and hair regrowth starts at 4-6 months and final results are assessed at one year. An oral antibiotic and topical antibiotic for the donor area are provided as well.
What Are the Risks and Complications of PHT Procedure?
The following risks/complications after a pubic hair transplant exist:
- Poor angulation: Grafts may at times grow not as flat to the skin surface as intended
- Poor regrowth: As with any hair transplant, poor regrowth is possible but rare, especially when scalp hairs are used
- Cysts: Though very rare, inclusion cysts can form in the transplanted area
Does a Pubic Hair Transplant Leave Scars?
With the FUE method of hair extraction, small circular scars are left behind but are barely noticeable even with a complete shave. With the FUT method, a linear scar is left behind and is therefore usually not recommended. The recipient area where the new pubic hairs grow should not display any scars.
What Are the Contraindications for Pubic Hair Transplant?
Contraindications to hair transplant procedure include:
- Medical conditions that are not compatible with local anesthesia containing epinephrine
- Scarring alopecias or autoimmune alopecia areata
- Lack of donor hair supply
What Are the Alternatives to Pubic Hair Transplant?
The only option for a natural-appearing permanent pubic hair restoration, especially when very few hairs remain, is with pubic hair transplant surgery. Other, less invasive and less permanent options include:
- Microblading: A temporary ink is used to create the illusion of hair in different pattern options
- Hair piece: A merkin, or pubic hair piece, is available from certain vendors
